Population growth is some areas of Quebec is strong, such as Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Joliette which both grew by over 9% from 2001 to 2006. Many smaller cities in Quebec have negative population growth. Only in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia have cities achieved population growth in this range or higher. Quebec is dominated by the cities of Montreal (3,635,571 people) and Quebec City (715,515 people), which together account for 58% of the total population of the province. Both cities have modest population growth, as Montreal grew by 5.3% and Quebec City by 4.2% from 2001 to 2006. Mobility for Quebec’s major cities is low relative to the rest of Canada suggesting mature markets (similar to Ontario).
